The third in the Ohio Valley trilogy (the first two are Betty Zane and Spirit of the Border), this book wrapped up a fun period of reconnecting with an old friend in Zane Gray. Had not read these three before. Surprisingly engaging stories for the straightforward action/adventure/romance genre. And the author writes as one who has studied the period and the setting. One nice thing about reading the older authors is that you don't have to deal with the trashy language -- and the story's just as good without it. I was inspired to read a couple of other Zane Gray novels.
This book is from an archaic genre – an old-fashioned “cowboy and Indian” story. Or, a “frontiersman and Indian” story to be more exact, there are now cows or cowboys. It is set shortly after the American Revolutionary War, at Fort Henry. Maybe this is the real Fort Henry, which is in Tennessee, or maybe it is fictional, but probably the latter because West Virginia and Ohio are the states that are mentioned. The white men and women are definitely the heroes, and most of the Indians and a few white outlaws are the villains. Along side the tension between whites and Indians there is a romance story. Beautiful Helen is a new arrival at Fort Henry, and she is attracted to the “borderman” Jonathan. Now a borderman is a super-hero who can track an Indian anywhere, has killed more than a few Indians, can sense things in the forest that a normal human being can’t sense, and has no room in his life for romance. Actually it seems as though the romance story is the primary theme, and the struggle between good whites and outlaw whites and their Indian allies is just a backdrop for the romance. The romantic scenes do not go past hand-holding, a couple of kisses, and an abrupt confession of “I love you.”
Sometimes I thought it strange that the characters were living on the frontier but weren’t working for a living, as far as you can tell from the book. Jonathan and Lew are always fighting Indians and outlaws, and Colonel Zane is the leader of the settlement, but how do they make a living? I guess I’m not supposed to wonder about that.
There are a couple of places where one of the heroes is in a dire predicament, and the narrative skips to another scene without explaining how the hero escaped.
The conclusion of the book is okay but a little bit contrived.
Of course anything written by Zane Grey is worth reading so I downloaded 'Desert Gold' to my . The thing is it's one of those westerns that makes you wish you could have been there. The first story finds a man brooding over the love of his life from whom he has been separated by circumstance when he is joined at his campfire by an old man and his donkey. The cowboy is mystified by the talk and actions of this old man who insists on traveling together. The climax of the story is a surprise that will confound you.
The second story is about a young man who leaves home in the city to make his fortune in the wild west. He runs into a former classmate on his travels and together the two of them are in and out of trouble often. There are of course, two lovely women, one a mexican princess, the other a born & bred Westerner. You will enjoy this tale of the old west even if you've never read a western before.
Beauty and the beastly characteristics of brutal men come together in this story of a beautiful woman pursued by many men with lust to capture her against her will. She's fortunate to have protectors who will go to any length to rescue her. The story depicts the rescue attempts and the cunning and savagery of these encounters. Self sacrificial love it's a part of the story to rescue this beautiful moment. Suspense is found in the tale to the very end. Enjoyed the story and I do recommend it to others.
Colonel Eb Zane and his extended family are settlers of the Frontier around Fort Henry, a wilderness outpost along the Ohio River in America's pre-Revolution era. Jonathan Zane, Eb's younger brother, is one of the last of the Bordermen, defenders of the Frontier against lawless white and native elements.
While very well written, I gave this novel only four stars because of Grey's one-dimensional treatment of the Indians portrayed in the story. This isn't a complaint that the portrayal isn't politically correct, no novel from 1909 would exhibit that. It's just that ALL non-English dialog consists of one word - "ugh".
The Last Trail by Zane Grey
Story of Fort Henry and it's occupants and how some travel there to set up their farm to work it.
Even with the military being there the bordermen can't handle all the corruption of the Indians and their friends.
Helen and her father and nephew have arrived and she's quite put off one of the bordermen won't pay attention to her.
Story takes you to the places the bordermen hunt for those who've stolen the horses and women. You feel like you're there with them as they crawl along the ground
and smell and touch and see things in the surroundings.
This story of Dick Gale who has run away from his home in the east to find his niche in the west near the Mexican border is a good tale, though not one of Zane Grey's best. His search to protect a Mexican beauty for a new found friend is honorable, and even his search for love of his own is interesting. But this is not the kind of book that once you put down you can't wait to pick up. Sometimes I had trouble keeping my focus on my reading, and this is because the story sometimes wanders. Don't get me wrong, I liked the book, but it moves a bit slow at times and looses my interest.
