Final exams and end of year parties don’t seem so important at your brother’s funeral.

Two short weeks, and Meg would have survived her senior year relatively unscathed. But when her best and only friend—her brother—dies in a questionable road accident, being the loner in her year doesn’t fit as well as it used to.

One act of kindness from the man her small town isolated amidst rumors and lies, and her hope for a day where pain won’t overwhelm her doesn’t seem so far-fetched. Brett Carver is trouble with a capital T, but he’s also the only person who can get Meg to let go and smile.

Arrested for a crime he didn’t commit, the man who finally found a way to bring light back to her dark days is ripped away when she needs him most. Determined not to lose the only good thing to have come out of her year from hell, Meg sets out to prove Brett isn’t guilty. But first, she must accept the ugly truth … that the people who can prove his innocence are the same people who will do all it takes to keep them apart.

Life is never easy, but trying to cope with your brother’s death while your parents give you no emotional support sucks!
Drowning your sorrows at a party sounds like the thing to do, but fate has set in motion the one person who will safe Meg.
Carver is well versed in crap that life has to through at you, he’s family’s name has a bad reputation. Seeing Meg a party, he sits with her and their lives are forever changed in that moment.
The real life struggles that Meg and Carver face are beautifully written, the emotion of this book will be forever in my heart.
Max has brought these characters to life and given us such raw emotion with them that you feel like you are there with them.
What really brought this story home for me, was the small minded mentality of living in a small town.
I applaud Max, she had me crying, laughing so emotionally invested in each of the characters.
Totally love Meg and Carver, their undying commitment to give strength to one another no matter their own struggles.

Five stars and two VERY Enthusiastic thumbs up! I couldn't put it down! Literally I was up all night reading . . . Not gonna lie there were tears and a lot of OMG did that really just happen. . . As well as me holding my breath and trying to read faster to see what happened next . . .it's not what I expected .
. . It was so much better!!!
This book brought me back to my younger years where I also gravitated towards the "outcasts" in my town. Although I was the straight A student, not breaking any rules (well, not many anyway), I related better to those that people put down just because of their looks, family income or past mistakes. I truly loved this story and melt just thinking about Carver.
Max Henry is one of my favorite authors and I love her books but this one is by far my absolute favorite, Meg and Carved both won my heart he comes off as a total badass but well everything I say will be a spoiler so just know he's amazing. Meg brings out my mommy instincts her part in this book literally gutted me there were so many times I wanted to crawl through that book and strangle her parents this book will stay with me for a long time it made me think of things long buried when a book can make you feel like you're a part of it and you're living it you've got an amazing story don't take my word for it check the book out yourself and I'm sure you'll agree with me
Words are not enough for how beautiful this love story is. It's a modern day Romeo and Juliette - her parents think he is trash! She sees his inner beauty. He treads her well when no one else does.

I love the authors writing style. It's real and honest. I can picture the story as I'm reading.

It's great to read a book where it's not a billionaire saying "come be my princess we will live happily ever after"
This book surprised me with how much I enjoyed it. It's set in New Zealand which is always good with me. Meg and Carver are two extremely lost souls who are perfect for each other, they make each other work and their connection is deep. This book is way different to what Max has ever written I think and she nailed it!
I want to seriously jump into the book and strangle Meg's parents, I've not felt like that about a book in a long time but those two were out of their minds crazy!
I loved Carver's sister Tanya and how she encouraged Meg and Carver. I loved how Carver and Meg bring out the best in each other but that they didn't have it easy, the has to fight for each other hard!
I don't even know what to say. Words completely fail me at this moment.

All I can say about Malaise is that this story is all about blind faith. Not giving up in the face of adversity and overcoming tragedy and heart break even when one feels as though it will never be right again.

Everything happens for a reason. We may not understand those reasons, but when it's right, the meaning comes to us in a flash.

Megan--pushed completely from her comfort zone, had to learn to stand on her own two feet and cope with a devastating loss.

Brett Carver--outcast, misfit, the wrong guy, but perfect in Meg's eyes.

Sometimes, the one we want isn't the one who's right for us and it takes a moment that changes everything to make us see how strong we truly are.

Max, I don't know how you do it each time, but I find myself in your characters. This is a story I will read again especially when I need a reminder that I am strong and smart and can do what I push myself to do.

Malaise hit home for me and I'm glad that I read this book. Emotional and poignant, strong and true to who Max Henry is. In a haze of sadness, it's difficult to see the happy on the other side, but with the people who love us and see the best in us, it only pushes us to be better.
Max Henry has done it once again. Never ever does she let me down and this book is definitely no exception. She has written a story that kept me fully engrossed and enthralled from beginning to end. She has taken me on a beautiful journey of friendship and discovery that will remain in my heart for a very long time.

17 year old Meg's world is turned upside down when her brother dies, to ease the pain she turns to alcohol and in turn finds friendship where she least expects it, from Brett Carver and later his sister Tanya. Meg and Carver are both broken souls but together they take the reader on a journey that brings out their heart and their inner strength.

The emotions that I went through reading this story were many, I laughed, cried (and I mean sobbed - tissues a requirement), I got so angry that I wanted to have a smackdown with a couple of characters but most of all I felt the love and friendship that developed between Meg and Carver. The strength of these two characters was amazing - they get knocked down so many times, but they are always willing to get back up again and start over.

Absolutely exceptional Max Henry. Another string to add to your bow.

FIVE STARS from a reader who loves your work.
