Silver Smoke Seven Halos #1 Monica Leonelle 9780984234820 Books

I had my eye set on Silver Smoke for quite some time now and i was really glad when i finally started reading it!Needless to say i wasn't disappointed in the least.

Silver Smoke surprised me in many ways...The world building is so complicated and with so many details that despite the fact i was in total loss at the beggining,by the end i couldn't help but be amazed by Monica Leonelle's ability to create such a world in so many details and manage to not lose the point of her story in those exact details.I loved the story of the Hallows and Nephilim and how they are descended from Michael and Luci.I was intrigued by the politics and the system in which they lived.I haven't encountered yet in any book such complexicity and detailing, and although i have read a number of books about angels, that world building was something new to me.
Monica Leonelle's writing style is simple, efficient and fresh. She managed to hold my interest even when the politics were explained (I hate politics even when they are fictional!).

The book is written is multiple POV's,something that bothered me especially at the beggining of the story making me feel at a total loss, but as the story progressed i got used to it and it even helped me understand better some things about the world.
My favorite character in the book is by far Rykken.I loved him from the beggining of the story and i liked his development throughout the book. And from the progress of the story i think it's safe to assume that we will see more and greater things about him in the next books of the series.
Brie on the other hand had me confused as a character. There were times i liked her and times i found her acting in a completely selfish way making me angry with her.But the romance between her and Rykken was among the highlights of the book.I couldn't help but smirk with the way they treated each other and the way their romance bloomed.I'm not a big fan of the instant knowledge between the protagonists that they found their true soulmate from the first pages of a story. And in Silver Smoke that's the exact thing that's been avoided. And for that thing only, the romance is much more believable and sweet for me.
Pilot is another character i liked reading about and he reminded me so much of my own brother that i couldn't help but adore him.
The advantage of the multiple POV's is that it allows the reader to take insight to more characters at once and Monica Leonelle made that work as a total advantage for her story. You get to see the good and bads in more characters and the secondary ones weren't used only when the story needed them but had a voice of their own.

Before i end this review,i just have to say that i loved two more things. One the twists in the end (i won't elaborate further cause those twists are what kept me up late last night and i don't want to spoil it for you) and the fact that many Greek myths and words were used. The myth with Great Alexander's sister especially impressed me the most.I liked the alterations in those myths even more so if they were to be used as the originals.

All in all,Silver Smoke is a really interesting debut novel by an author that promises much more in the future. The ending just left me eager for the sequel.Seriously, although not a huge cliffhanger, there were many things unanswered, enough to make me wait anxiously for the second book.

Silver Smoke Seven Halos #1 Monica Leonelle 9780984234820 Books Reviews

The story opens with Brie and her brother Pilot being chased by paparazzi. Brie thinks she sees her mother among them, the only thing is, her mother died months ago; thus begins, Silver Smoke.

It started off with a bit of a bang - Brie is almost immediately inducted into a secret group called the Hallows. The Hallows are nephilim (offspring of angels and humans) and they have special powers, the interesting thing though is, Brie seems to have powers while Pilot doesn't. There is also Rykken, Pilot's best friend, who seems to have issues of his own.

There are a lot of things going on in this novel, powers discovered, training to be done, mysteries to uncover and a whole new set of world rules to introduce, to be quite honest I found it very overwhelming. I felt as though this single book had enough information for two books, and in a way, that might have worked better. Due to the amount of information, there were times when some of the characters and storylines got lost.

I find it difficult to explain much of the fantasy side of the story, from reading it seems that there are a few mythical elements. There is the Hallows, the Silver Smoke (the villains) and then there is the story of the shark men and the selkies - another representation of Hallows and Silver Smoke. I wasn't sure why there needed to be two different telling of the same myth in the same book, for a while I had a bit of trouble keeping it all straight.

I do admire Monica Leonelle's imagination and the direction she took these myths. She did a great job in making them her own and in describing her world; however, I felt that character development lost to world building. I didn't find myself caring about any of the main characters and the minor characters were very forgettable, so while I liked reading about the world it was hard for me to pay attention to what the characters were doing.

Though the book was called Silver Smoke, the group itself wasn't the focus of the story so I didn't feel the story was resolved. I'm also hoping that the Silver Smoke organization can be elaborated on in the next novel. There is definitely a lot to tell, I'm hoping the other novels are a bit lighter on the world building and heavier on the character building.
Silver Smoke is the first book in a series by new author Monica Leonelle. She reached out to me to see if I had any interest in being part of her book tour. I love supporting people and businesses so of course was happy to work with her and help spread the word about her new book, but I didn't realize that I would be the lucky one.

Honestly, I have had so little time to read lately that I wondered if I could actually finish Silver Smoke in under two weeks, especially during this busy time of the year. But one week later, the book was finished.

I absolutely LOVE finding a book or series that sucks me in. One that I crave time to read...it has been awhile since I was sucked in like this. But Silver Smoke pulled me in and it felt amazing, probably even more so because it did so during this insanely busy time of the year.

Fantasy books are a favorite of mine, but finding well written one's are hard to find. Leonelle builds an entertaining and rich world for the Nephilms and Hallows in Silver Smoke...one with a rich history that left me with so many questions. From the sounds of it in this interview with Monica Leonelle, the author, readers will not be disappointed; we will learn more as we read the remaining six books in the series.

Silver Smoke is well written with a complex story line. The bonus is that readers can easily navigate the multifaceted characters and world they live in. When I began reading, I found myself trying to keep a mental list of the characters so I could fully understand the story. I quickly realized I could relinquish that and simply sit back and enjoy this book because the author would not leave me hanging and back tracking to remember who was who and who did what.
