How I Write Secrets of a Bestselling Author Janet Evanovich Ina Yalof 9780312354282 Books

There are no secrets here. This is just a big advertisement for her bounty hunter series. Janet just goes on and on about her characters ad nauseam. Yes, characters are important, but she doesn't include any wider information. She just talks about the backstory on a few characters found in her books. Tremendously disappointed I blew ten bucks on this book. Should have bough Big Little Lies instead. At least I'd have fun reading something!

How I Write Secrets of a Bestselling Author Janet Evanovich Ina Yalof 9780312354282 Books Reviews

Thank you so much for such an inspirational book. Many of your encouragements resonated deeply with me. I liked that you covered the writing process from ideas to publishing. I am an indie author, but enjoyed learning about the traditional publishing path. I have read all your Plum novels and love them. Even though they are the reason I have been forbidden to read in bed anymore. Waking up the hubby by laughing is a no-no! Thanks again!
Janet Evanovich has provided a provocative account of how she goes about creating memorable writing. She not only provides the technical details, but gives the reader a look inside her mind as she creates characters and events that make you want to keep turning the page. I am currently working on two manuscripts (a novel and a follow-on to my first book on leadership), and I keep "How I Write" on the desk. Whenever I hit a snag in my writing, I stop and read a few pages of her book. Its like one of those six-hour energy drinks - just gets me started again and keeps me going for hours. My only regret is that when I was writing "Things I Learned from my Grandmother about Leadership and Life" I didn't have Janet (her book, that is) at my side.Things I Learned from My Grandmother About Leadership and Life (How to Light a Fire Under People Without Burning Them Out)
I love reading Evanovich's books; so when I found out that she has written a how-to book on writing, I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy. The very first page grabbed me with her essential rules, and made me laugh aloud. I was guilty. After that, I could not put it down. D

This book is written in Evanovich's usual style, and she answers so many questions that I have always had regarding publishing a book. She goes through her system of writing, the actual parts of a story and how you may want to write them, and then on to the actual publishing world.

Ina Yolaf gives you the more technical details of writing, and also her insight into the writing world as well. You feel like she is a good friend helping you out, and she is a good balance to Janet's lighter side.

Lastly, Janet's daughter Alex is also a big part of this book as well. She is Janet's web-master, and has kept track of the Q&A's over the years for her mom. She gives you internet savvy advice in trying to get your name out there.

Overall, this is a fun and easy book to read. It actually made me pull out my file of book ideas and get started. I have already gone back to parts of this book as a reference, and hope to actually write something good enough to publish one day. D

Thank you ladies for writing this book, I really appreciate it.

Janet has shared facts about her writing life 'How I Write Secrets of a Bestselling Author.' Sharing the good and the bad; she entertains us with stories of showing up to a closed book store signing, buying the limo driver a cake, trips to the store for ?I think it was cheese doodles?. Just as you would think, she is a real person, with a real life and a dedication to continue entertaining us, and sometimes reminding us that we all have idiosyncrasies, as well as good days and bad. The facts are here also. She covers how to format your manuscript, create that dreaded query letter, and overcome writer's block. It is entertaining and informative. I highly recommend it.
I'm not a reader or writer of fiction but I found this book to be very helpful. I learned a lot that will help with my non-fiction book writing such as the mindset of a writer(I believe this is Janet's key to success), how to become a better writer, editing tips, dealing with rejection, navigating the journey to becoming a successful author and more. Ive read this book twice now, I picked up a lot more tips this second time around. Fantastic read full of wit, humor and kick-in-the-pants advice. Pure gold for beginners!

This isn't some technical engineering breakdown of the art of writing by any means, but it is good conversation about how one very successful writer goes about her business of putting story ideas to work. In the usual Evanovich style, it's done in an entertaining manner that will make you smile while you mull over the writing topics being discussed. Excerpts from Janet's best selling Stephanie Plum series are used as examples of various story building parts. All in all, it's worth a read.
I really enjoyed this book, especially the parts about how Janet's career got started (not early, not quickly, and not easily). She persevered and experimented until she found her niche. Her family sounds incredibly supportive and helpful -- I'm jealous!

The writing tips were all sound and to the point, but this is not a manual. It is, however, a good supplement to more technical how-to-write books, and a good guide for genre fiction writers.

This book was published a decade ago, and at the time the author was not a fan of self-publishing. I would love to hear her views on how the market has changed in the time since she wrote that, and whether she would advise beginning authors differently now.
